Tongkat Ali as a Potential Herbal Supplement for Physically Active Male and Female Seniors—A Pilot Study

Summary

A comparative study investigating the effects of Physta® Tongkat Ali (TA) extract on elderly individuals as an ergogenic supplement. 25 test subjects consisting of 13 physically active male and 12 physically active female seniors were supplemented with 400mg of Tongkat Ali extract daily for 5 weeks.

  • Significant increases in total, free testosterone concentration, and muscular force in both men (15.1%, 61.1%, and 16.6%) and women (48.6%, 122%, and 13.7%) after 5 weeks.
  • The increase in free testosterone in women was attributed to a significant decline in sex hormone-binding globulin concentrations.
  • The study confirms the ergogenic benefit of Tongkat Ali through enhanced muscle strength.
  • TA supplementation increased the Testosterone/Cortisol (T/C) ratio in men due to significantly increased testosterone levels, indicating an increase in the body’s anabolic status.
  • TA supplementation improved aging symptoms (AFS) in women.

Conclusions:

The study confirmed the ergogenic benefit of Physta Tongkat Ali for physically active seniors and its potential to increase free testosterone and muscle strength. Physta Tongkat Ali supplement was found to have no adverse effects on senior recreational athletes.

The effect of Eurycoma Longifolia on the regulation of reproductive hormones in young males

Summary

A placebo-controlled, double-blind, matched-paired study to assess the impact of TA supplementation on the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axes in healthy young men (18 -30 years). 32 young men received 600mg/day of Tongkat Ali or placebo for two weeks.

  • Increased testosterone levels by 15% and free testosterone levels by 34% in healthy young men. The increase in testosterone may be due to direct stimulation of the adrenal gland in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and not only via the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis.
  • The lack of changes in luteinizing hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone and sexual hormone-binding globulin suggests that TA has a lesser effect on the HPG axis. The rise in estradiol levels also suggests that the aromatase may not be inhibited.
  • The steroidogenic effects of TA on young men were dose-related, and a higher dosage of Tongkat Ali (600mg/day) for two weeks was safe and effective in increasing testosterone levels in young males. Further investigation is needed to understand the mechanisms behind the effect of EL on both the HPA and HPG axes.

Conclusions:

Tongkat Ali supplementation increases testosterone and free testosterone levels in young men due to direct stimulation of the adrenal gland in the HPA axis and to a lesser extent the HPG axis. The TA supplement (for two weeks) was found to be acceptable, with no adverse effects on young males even at higher doses (600mg/day).

Effect of Eurycoma Longifolia standardised aqueous root extract Physta® on testosterone levels and quality of life in ageing male subjects: a randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled multicentre study

Summary

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study evaluated the efficacy and safety of Physta® TA in improving testosterone levels and quality of life in ageing male subjects. The study enrolled 105 participants, with 35 in each group (Physta® 100 mg, Physta® 200 mg, and placebo).

  • The study found that supplementation with Physta® Tongkat Ali, at both 100 mg and 200 mg doses, led to a significant increase in total testosterone levels compared to placebo. The Physta® 200 mg group showed a more gradual and higher increase in total testosterone, while the Physta® 100 mg group showed a significant increase in total testosterone levels only from week 8 to 12. However, there were no significant between-group differences in free testosterone levels.
  • Physta® Tongkat Ali supplementation also reduced the symptoms of aging and fatigue, as evidenced by significant reductions in AMS and FSS scores.
  • No serious adverse events related to the treatment was observed.

Conclusions:

The study concludes that supplementation with Physta® Tongkat Ali at doses of 100 mg and 200 mg can significantly improve total testosterone levels in aged male subjects with low testosterone levels, resulting in enhanced quality of life scores and reduced symptoms of aging and fatigue. No adverse events occurred directly as a result of Tongkat Ali supplementation.
