What is Viagra, Cialis and Levitra and how does it work?

Viagra(sildenafil), Cialis (tadalafil) and Levitra (vardenafil) belong to a class of drugs known as PDE5-inhibitors. They are also known as laboratory-produced drugs or synthetic drugs.

Here is a simple explanation on how these drugs improve sexual libido and medically treat ED patients.

  • The mechanism works when a chemical called Nitric Oxide (NO) sends a message to the tissues of the penis and fills it with blood. The more blood flow to your penis, the harder your erection is.
  • The PDE5-inhibitor drugs activate the erection “off switch,” thus helping the erection to last longer. To avoid confusion, kindly note that these medications do not help with turning erections “on”–– as this overall erection experience is down to how your body, mind and soul interacts with one another.

Another caveat in this article is – the term “last longer” does not necessarily equate to “long lasting performance in bed” nor it solves premature ejaculation issues.

How are Viagra and Cialis taken?

The golden rule – Viagra (sildenafil) should not be taken with food.

Ideally, wait 1 to 2 hours after eating before consuming it. The effect can be felt as fast as 11 minutes, or 30 minutes on average.

Based on scientific evidence and research, you’ll have to wait 1 hour before it reaches maximum effect.

Viagra will last for 3 to 5 hours after first consumption before the effect wears off after the 6th hour onwards. It is recommended to avoid fatty meals and alcohol as it will make it less effective.

The graph below shows the performance of sildenafil (Viagra) taken with and without food.

On the other hand, tadanafil (Cialis) is a pill that is not affected by food – making it more flexible than Viagra.

Yes, you can consume it at any time: either when you need it or regularly every day.

The effect will start as fast as within 15 minutes, but you’ll have to wait 2 hours for it to be most effective. Cialis stays in your body for about 17 hours (that’s longer than Viagra!) helping you with erections at any point during that period.

Before you get excited, both Viagra and Cialis have both severe side-effects that you need to consider.

What are the most common side effects of Viagra and Cialis?

The most documented side effects of Viagra and Cialis (including substance containing PDE5-inhibitors) from official sources are:

  • An erection that will not go away (priapism)
  • Sudden vision loss in one or both eyes
  • Sudden hearing decrease or hearing loss
  • Mild or severe headache
  • Mild or severe diarrhea
  • Nasal Congestion
  • Nosebleeds
  • Indigestion
  • Muscle pain
  • Flushing

Here is not-so-fun fact. Researchers found 2,200 death linked to Erectile Dsyfunction (ED) Drugs based on USFDA Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology reports.

You cannot run away from the notorious side effects of Viagra and Cialis, although there are herbal alternatives such as Tongkat Ali with little to no side effects. More about Tongkat Ali later in this article.

With Viagra, there is a higher risk of vision changes or loss (3% of men get blue vision lasting a few hours) than with Cialis. On the other hand, Cialis has a slightly higher risk of muscle pain than Viagra, although many downplay such risk.

If you are bothered by the side effects of these medications, please refrain yourself from consuming Viagra or Cialis with immediate effect.

A more serious side effect that is rarely talked about is all PDE5-inhibitors can lower your blood pressure. Whilst you may not be necessarily affected, but if you are diagnosed with high blood pressure, then it is recommended to avoid taking Viagra or Cialis.

A sudden drop in blood pressure can make you feel dizzy, causing black out, or even cause a sudden heart attack. If you are consuming a nitrate-filled drug (i.e for angina or high blood pressure), you must never use sildenafil (Viagra), tadalafil (Cialis), or any similar medication.

Does Levitra provide similar effect?

Less known Levitra (vardenafil) is a brand developed by Bayer as a response to Pfizer’s Viagra. It is considered a relatively expensive drug compared to Viagra or Cialis.

From a molecular structure standpoint, vardenafil found in Levitra to be very similar to sildenafil and differs in that the pyrazolo-pyrimidine heterocycle is replaced by an isosteric imidazo-triazine core. Here is how both  molecular structures look like.

However, scientists reported that vardenafil is considered five to 10 times more potent than sildenafil.

If sildenafil hasn’t worked for you, then Levitra is worth trying – although many consumers reported little to no noticeable difference compared to Viagra and Cialis.

Due to similar molecular structure as sildenafil, the side effects are very similar but Levitra is better taken on an empty stomach and starts working in as quickly as 14 minutes.

The maximum effect was recorded at an average of 45 minutes and it will last for a period of up to 5 hours. The typical starting dose of vardenafil (Levitra) is 10 mg; this can be adjusted to 5 mg or 20 mg depending on need.

So in short, both vardenafil and sildenafil are “cousins” in the family of synthetic drugs – since both exhibit similar molecular properties.

How about natural viagra such as Tongkat Ali?

Natural aphrodisiacs have been a subject of debate until recently.

Tongkat Ali is herbal root from a plant known as Eurycoma Longifolia and used for centuries as natural aphrodisiac in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia.

Also known as the Malaysian Ginseng, Tongkat Ali is now gaining global popularity amongst those seeking for natural alternative remedies. This is in line with the massive growth of herbal supplements sold in the US.

Tongkat Ali contains major bioactive compounds found in eurycomanonequassinoids and alkaloids. These bio-active compounds exhibit anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and anti-microbial properties by scientists.

The mechanism for sexual libido works by boosting (or rather restoring) testosterone hormone in your body. Low testosterone is closely correlated with low sexual libido. Beyond 35 years, our level of testosterone drops significantly – 50% less when we are in our 20s.

Due to recent scientific breakthroughs from various clinical trials – health benefits from Tongkat Ali ranges from improved energy levels, erection hardness, sperm motility, improve muscle strength, improve mood and others.

Discover 12 scientifically proven benefits of Tongkat Ali that are compiled from credible researches and studies around the world.

How effective is Tongkat Ali?

Modern science has successfully measured Tongkat Ali’s effectiveness using human trials in recent years. Studies are based on 200 to 400 mg of dosage daily with regular interval of one week off and on cycle.

Results below taken from clinical trials using human subjects from studies published in Asian Journal of Andrology and Journal of Evidence Based Alternative Medicine in 2014:

Sperm Concentration & Motility
17 million of sperm per mL 65%
Harder Erection
3.54 Erection Hardness Scale (EHS) 39%

For easy reference, details of the above results (with charts and links to downloadable white papers) are documented here.

So, if you are big fan of herbal and natural products or simply curious, Tongkat Ali is definitely worth a try! Before you purchase any product, you may want to view top trusted brands of Tongkat Ali here.

A word of caution – herbal products generally do not work in similar manner as laboratory produced drugs, hence the reaction time may take longer for a person to experience the maximum effect.

If value is defined as long term overall health benefits and affordability, then the clear winner is Tongkat Ali. As there are multiple brands out there, do check our top brand survey before making your first purchase!

However, if you are seeking for an instant erection or treat specific issue related to erectile dysfunction, then look no further than Viagra or Levitra as the best value.

The bottom line - our holistic perspective

Sildenafil (Viagra) is by far the most accessible and popular as one with the longest brand known in the market.

Because of its popularity, there are many counterfeits sold online and in the open market. We prepared a list of banned sex supplements by drugs authorities here for easy reference.

Viagra is ideal for someone who is expecting immediate reaction, however it must be taken on an empty stomach.

Tadalafil (Cialis) and Vadenafil (Levitra) is generally more expensive but but comes with inherent side-effects. It can also be consumed with or without a meal which is practical to many people.

Tongkat Ali, dubbed as natural viagra by the Telegraph UK and ABC News has attracted new stream of users – those who are seeking herbal remedies and moving away from side-effects from laboratory-produced drugs.

At a very affordable and attractive price point, this could be a threat to the bigger players as Tongkat Ali is clinically proven to improve sexual libido and safe to use, after years of scientific studies performed on human test subjects.

The bottom line is, the best choice is down to you. The American College of Physicians (ACP) recommends that the choice of medication be up to you – which will vary greatly depending on your personal preference of cost, lifestyle, purpose and other requirements.
